you make an ordinary landscape into something splendid and unique. Completly love this. Brenda H., CA
In this painting I tried to make the sky very distinguishable using a series of grids, colors and symbols. The water also uses grids and colors, but has a more distorted look to give the appearance of reflective shapes. I tried to use a limited palette of blues and greens for the majority of the painting in the hopes that this would create a strong focal point of the reds, oranges and yellows seen in the sunset.

Corner of Rolesville and Puryear Road - 12x12" Acrylic on Canvas
I came across this Tobacco field not far from my home on Rolesville Road in Northeast Raleigh. The picture was taken in late October so there were some interesting fall colors in the composition. I used some of my favorite Matisse acrylic colors to create this painting. Australian Sienna is somewhat of mix of Raw Sienna and Cadmium Orange – you see a lot of this in the field and in the center of the big tree. Some of the greens used are Australian Olive Green and Australian Sap Green – I generally avoid specialty colors like these, but the Australian series of Matisse acrylics is a real good range.
Matisse Flow paints are a thinner consistency and match the color range of the heavy body structure acrylics. I use these for glazing and for accentuating certain areas. The big shiny leaves on the tree and certain areas of the filed are a combination of Flow acrylics and glazing medium. I usually apply this with applicator bottles, similar to how one might decorate a cake. This gives a neat effect that works well with things like flowing water or leaves blowing in the wind.

Milburnie Fishing Club - 30x40" Acrylic on Canvas
Inspired by a real place just off highway 64 in Knightdale. I was lucky enough to capture this area at sunset, while the mauve / red sky definitely has some artistic license, the area is quite interesting with hundred of sunken trees. I am very satisfied with my color choices for this painting. I consider this one of my signature pieces. I’ve never fished there, but I’m sure the bass are plentiful.

Sunset Over a Wake County Tobacco Field - 20x16" Acrylic on Canvas
For the past couple of months I have really been using geometry and shapes to emphasize elements in my paintings. While I feel this experimentation has been successful, I probably have been too focused on that one aspect and subsequently have neglected other important areas. In looking at my past two paintings (Atlantic Beach and Rocky Mountain National Park) blues and greens dominate the entire surface. I don't think I squeezed one drop of red or mixed one stroke of orange or yellow in hours upon hours of painting. Hopefully my latest painting addresses this issue with a more vibrant palette of colors. The sunset over the field provides a nice contrast of the sky against the trees, while the reds, yellows and oranges give the paintings some punch with colors I do not often use.
It is a 1-1/2" canvas with all four sides painted. It is presented as an unframed work.

this work is beautiful.. colorful and rich in detail... a terrific piece!!.. Reb F., Montreal, QC Canada
In a further evolution of working with grids and the patterns within them, I used the sky of this work for more experimentation and abstraction. Like the earlier piece I did of the Quarry at the Eno River, the sky and water were broken down into 1/2"x1/2" squares. The sky was first pained in a series of contrasting blues, and then symbols of were added in other blue contrasts. After this a light blue glaze was applied over the entire sky. The water does not have quite the same abstraction, but the same painting methods were used. I like the way the rocks were positioned in this setting. Being the rocks were right on the river bank it allowed me to use a different palette of colors to distinguish the main body of land from the water.

A View from my Back Porch - 12x12" Acrylic on Panel and Glass
My favorite part of the week is usually Saturday night around 6:00 or so. After a day of painting or running errands I love to sit out on my deck and enjoy a cigar and a cold beverage. My deck is elevated about 12’ from the ground so it overlooks my lawn that extends into a wooded area.
The painting shown is a view from my deck. The lawn and forest area are painted on a 12x16” Gessobord panel. The planks and beams of the deck are painted on a piece of glass. Before I framed the piece I separated the glass and the panel with four balsa wood strips that are concealed by the lip of the frame. The picture shown does not really give the right perception, but if you were to look at the painting from any angle you can really see how the glass is offset from the panel.
This piece was accepted into the Junior League of Ralegh's "Someplace Like Home" Exhibit and will be on display at "A Shopping Spree" in October 2009.

Neuse River at Buffaloe Road #1 - 30x40" Acrylic on Canvas
I used alot of glazing techniques to capture the water surface. I painted this picture in February of 2008. I think the color palette of browns and grays really reflects the seasonality of the location.
